The "t Zwaantje" resistance monument (‘t Zwaantje’ Verzet Monument) in Delfzijl serves as a reminder of the local resistance group that fought against the occupation during World War II.
Dr. Allard Oosterhuis, a Delfzijl-based physician and shipowner, led the resistance group 't Zwaantje. He also established a smuggling route between the port of Delfzijl and Stockholm, Sweden. Through this operation, people and espionage materials were transported out of occupied Netherlands, while radio transmitters, photos of the queen, and funds for the resistance were covertly brought into the country aboard ships. On July 21, 1943, the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service) uncovered the resistance group. Despite facing a collective death sentence, most members of the group managed to survive the war.
The inscription on the monument reads:
"RESISTANCE
GROUP ZWAANTJE
1940-1945"
