‘Stilstaan’ Monument, Delfzijl

The "Standing Still" (‘Stilstaan’) monument in Delfzijl,  comprises two corten steel suitcases of various sizes. One of the suitcases bears a text referencing the forced departure of the Jewish community from Delfzijl and its surrounding villages on March 11, 1942. This text is inscribed in the same font as the name wall of the "Light of the Sea" monument. On the opposite side of the large suitcase, two wedding rings, symbolizing unity, are affixed, echoing the design of the war monument in the town hall. The smaller suitcase is filled with stones. This new memorial replaces the Jewish plaque that was previously attached to the side wall of the train station building.

The text on the monument reads:
"STAND STILL

ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1942, ALMOST ALL JEWISH RESIDENTS OF DELFZIJL WERE FORCED TO DEPART FROM THIS STATION BY THE GERMAN OCCUPIERS, HEADED FOR AMSTERDAM.

ALMOST NO ONE SURVIVED THE HORRORS OF THE HOLOCAUST.

FIFTY AND 75 YEARS LATER, ON THIS DAY, WE HAVE STOOD STILL, NAMED THEM, AND LAID STONES.

STAND STILL AND CONTINUE TO REMEMBER."
