Het Bevrijdingsbos, Groningen

The Bevrijdingsbos (Liberation Forest) is a forest on the outskirts of the city of Groningen near Noorddijk, between the Lewenborg neighborhood and the village of Garmerwolde.

The forest was planted in 1995 during the 50th anniversary celebration of the liberation of the Netherlands, as a gesture of gratitude and tribute to the Canadian liberators of Groningen in April 1945. There are 30,000 maple trees planted, as the leaf of this tree is the national symbol of Canada. In and around the Liberation Forest, there is also the so-called 'Square of the World', an information board, a memorial bench, and a memorial stone with the names of the Canadian military units that drove out the Germans at the time. Through the forest runs a path with large stones from 10 different countries, each representing one of the Ten Rights of the Child. The path ends with a stone representing the eleventh right: the right of the child to play freely and without fear outdoors.
