Oorlogsmonument, Delfzijl

The war memorial (oorlogsmonument) in Delfzijl commemorates World War II and the citizens who lost their lives due to wartime actions.

In early April 1945, Allied forces approached Groningen rapidly. The liberation occurred in three regions: the border area near Musselkanaal, Groningen city, and the "Delfzijl bridgehead." After liberating Groningen from April 13 to 16, the Second Canadian Infantry Division turned to Delfzijl, which was heavily fortified.

Despite formidable defenses, the Canadians reached Delfzijl's outskirts by April 28, 1945. After capturing key positions, they secured the city on May 1, 1945. The battle resulted in casualties on both sides, civilian deaths, and significant damage.

The text on the front of the pedestal reads:

"For Those
Who Fell."

On the back of the pedestal, the years 1940-1945 are inscribed.

The monument is located in the park in front of the town hall, situated at Johan van den Kornputplein in Delfzijl.
