The 'Polizeigefängnis (police prison) Molenberg' monument in Delfzijl serves as a reminder to the people of Delfzijl about the Polizeigefängnis Molenberg.
In Polizeigefängnis Molenberg, the Sicherheitsdienst temporarily held prisoners in the bicycle shed of the U.L.O. school at Molenplein. Here, the detainees awaited either their release or transfer to the Scholtenhuis in Groningen or concentration camps.
The Scholtenshuis, located at Grote Markt in Groningen, served as the headquarters of the Sicherheitsdienst from September 1944 onwards. Resistance members (who were confined to the attic) were interrogated and subjected to torture by the occupying forces within this building. This infamous reputation earned it the nickname 'gateway to hell.' The building was destroyed during the liberation of the city.
