The war monument (Oorlogsmonument) serves as a reminder to the residents of Bedum of the struggle against the occupiers and the regained freedom and peace.
The decision to install the memorial was driven by the difficult accessibility of the stained glass windows in Bedum's town hall. It was also unveiled to mark the celebration of the 50th anniversary of liberation during the year of its dedication.
The text on the memorial reads:
'HARMONY OF LIFE
-BROKEN IN WAR-
RAISES THE HEART UPWARD,
FINDS BALANCE ONCE MORE.'
The monument is situated at the corner of Schoolstraat and Grotestraat in Bedum.
