Discover the experience of seeking refuge in Maastricht's underground bunkers during times of crisis. "Schuilen in Maastricht" (Sheltering in Maastricht) is a permanent exhibition located within one of the galleries in the Casemates.
This exhibition transports you back to the eras of World War II and the Cold War. Knowledgeable volunteers are eager to share insights into what transpired within these shelters during these wartime periods. When the air raid alarms sounded, thousands of civilians sought safety within these bunkers during World War II. Similarly, during the Cold War, these shelters were readied to accommodate hundreds of people. Fortunately, these shelters were phased out around 1990.
Did you know that the Schuilkeldermuseum is concealed beneath a residential area in the Minister Goeman Borgesiusplantsoen? It's a truly unique location! The park is encircled by an iron fence, and the entrance is marked by an iron gate leading below ground. During World War II, people would also escape through self-dug holes in their basements to access the Schuilkelder (shelter).
The Schuilkeldermuseum can be visited every third Sunday of the months from March to October, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Admission is free.
