Museum Stad, Appingedam

Appingedam, alongside Groningen, stands as the only city in the province with a medieval heritage. The Museum Stad Appingedam offers a glimpse into the history and culture of Appingedam and the Fivelingo region.

In the museum's recently updated permanent exhibit, special attention is given to Professor Cleveringa. During the Year of Resistance in 2018, the museum presents the exhibition 'Damster Freedom,' which delves into Professor Cleveringa's memories of his hometown and the profound significance of citizenship associated with it. Rudolph Pabus Cleveringa, born in Appingedam in 1894, is renowned for his impassioned speech in 1940 against the German occupiers' expulsion of his Jewish colleagues from the University of Leiden. The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the Province of Groningen and the Vfonds for Peace.
