The Jonkerbos War Cemetery is a military cemetery located in the Jonkerbos area of Nijmegen. The cemetery contains a total of 1,643 graves of Allied soldiers who were killed on Dutch soil between 3 September 1939 and 5 May 1945. Like all other military cemeteries of the British Commonwealth, the maintenance of this cemetery is the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The cemetery is located in the Jonkerbos, on the edge of the Goffert Park. It is surrounded by nature and can be accessed via Burgemeester Daleslaan, which runs through both the Jonkerbos and Goffert Park. There is a small parking area with space for a few cars.
Of the total number of buried soldiers, 1,629 served in the armed forces of one of the member states of the British Commonwealth, of which 99 remain unidentified. Thirteen served in the military of a country that was not part of the Commonwealth.
By branch of service, the cemetery is the final resting place of 1,389 British, 88 Canadian, 34 Australian, 21 New Zealand, 7 Polish, 5 Belgian, 2 Dutch, and 1 Russian soldiers. This does not necessarily reflect the nationality of the individuals—for example, five Czechoslovakians fought with the British Royal Air Force. The nationality of the fallen is indicated on their headstones. In some cases, the branch of service is known, but the individual's identity and/or nationality is not.
