Just a short distance from the Frisian coast lies the renowned casemates of Kornwerderzand on the Afsluitdijk. This is the sole location in Europe where the advance of the 'German Blitzkrieg' was halted in May 1940. Only 225 Dutch soldiers were able to successfully repel nearly 17,000 Germans.
The museum near the Afsluitdijk is situated to the west of the Lorentz Locks' sluice. Between 2010 and 2011, there was a renovation and expansion of the visitor center. This complex comprises a visitor center, several bunkers (including a command bunker, a kitchen/antiaircraft bunker, a machine gun bunker, a cannon bunker, and a searchlight bunker), and a waiting room.
The museum's primary focus is to provide information about the Battle of the Afsluitdijk during the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. It covers topics such as:
- The Kornwerderzand Fortifications
- The Wons Line
- The gunboat Johan Maurits van Nassau (which sank on May 14, 1940)
- The downed Lockheed Hudson aircraft
Additionally, the museum features a screening room where visitors can watch films, including interviews with veterans who served in this area.
