Fries Verzetsmuseum

The Frisian Resistance Museum (Fries Verzetsmuseum) is located in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden and focuses on narrating the history of Friesland province during World War II.

The museum's journey began in 1979 within the Kanselarij. Catharinus (Bob) Reitsma's collection formed the foundation of what would become the Resistance Museum Friesland. He was also the author of the book "Tekens aan de weg - tekens aan de wand." The initial spark for the museum was the liberation exhibition V-25 held at the Beursgebouw in 1970. The Friesland 1940-1945 Association played a pivotal role in establishing the Resistance Museum. On September 27, 1979, the museum was officially inaugurated, being referred to as the first resistance museum in the Netherlands at the time, despite the existence of the National War and Resistance Museum Overloon. Just seven months after opening, on April 23, 1980, the museum celebrated its 10,000th visitor. During the 1980s, the museum relocated to a building on the Zuiderplein. In 1994, it became a part of the Fries Museum. In 1995, it returned to the Kanselarij. In 2013, the museum moved once more, this time to the Wilhelminaplein (Zaailand). In December 2019, the museum underwent a redesign and now occupies the second floor of the Fries Museum building.
