Vrijheidsmonument, Finsterwolde

The Freedom Monument (Vrijheidsmonument) in Finsterwolde (municipality of Oldambt) is a bronze sculpture group consisting of three figures, placed on a pedestal made of red bricks. It depicts a man and a woman lifting a child together, while the child releases a dove. In front of the sculpture stands a square red stone featuring the emblem of the Belgian Parachute Regiment under a glass plate. A plaque is embedded on the front of the stone.

The inscription on the plaque reads:

“In April 1945 fell here for our liberation

J. Wathelet
D. Devignez

of the Belgian Parachute Regiment S.A.S.

Pilgrims for freedom and peace.”
