A Marine sergeant becomes a witness to a captain's actions on Guadalcanal, where the captain kills one of their fellow soldiers to conceal his own incompetence. The sergeant is concerned that his lower rank will make it hard to be believed, and he discovers that the captain has manipulated the situation to get him assigned to his next command. Additionally, the captain is trying to gain favor with the victim's family.
