Sword of Honour (2001)

Guy Crouchback, a scion of a declining English Roman Catholic family, comes back to England from Italy at the outbreak of World War II. He enlists in the Royal Corps of Halberdiers, serving alongside a cast of eccentric characters. His attempts at reconciliation with his estranged wife, Virginia, fail. Following his involvement in a colleague's death, he is dispatched to train a commando brigade on a Scottish island, eventually finding himself on the island of Crete, participating in its evacuation. Guy escapes to Egypt with fellow officers Ludovic and Ivor Claire. His return to England, arranged by Mrs. Stitch, may prevent him from revealing Claire as a deserter. Guy marries Virginia a second time, though she has a child with her former lover, Trimmer. While Guy grapples with partisans in Yugoslavia, Virginia and his uncle Peregrine perish in a doodlebug bomb attack. Returning to England after involvement with charitable organizations, Guy eventually enters into a new marriage.
