In 1992, France introduces a law to prosecute WWII Nazi collaborators for crimes against humanity. Magistrate Annemarie Livi takes on the case of Pierre Brossard, a former police officer involved in wartime atrocities. Brossard had escaped custody after a death sentence but later received a pardon. Livi, suspicious of police involvement, seeks help from Colonel Roux of the French Army.

Roux tells her about a Jewish organization tracking Brossard with plans to execute him. They suspect high-ranking government involvement in Brossard's pardon and Catholic Church support. Despite warnings from a government minister, Livi is determined to bring Brossard to justice.

Brossard, a devout Catholic in the traditionalist faction, seeks Church absolution while evading capture by Jewish pursuers and authorities. The story reveals various motives at play, including those of the Jewish organization and hidden agendas within the government.
