Howard W. Campbell Jr., an American who has spent most of his life in Germany, is initially recruited by the United States to serve as an informant during the impending Second World War. However, his path takes an unexpected turn as he becomes one of the prominent anti-Semitic propagandists for Nazi Germany.
Following the collapse of Hitler's regime, Campbell's government connections secure him a tranquil existence in the United States. For a time, his life remains peaceful, until a complex network of spies and neo-Nazis entangles him once more in the treacherous world he had once inhabited.
Ultimately captured by Israeli authorities, Campbell's sole defense hinges on the claim: "I was an American Spy," as he grapples with the consequences of his actions and alliances.
