In May of 1983, a man reaches the age of 49, and he embarks on a significant journey alongside his 17-year-old son. Their destination is the village in Baden that the man left four decades earlier. His purpose is to unravel the long-buried secrets from the past - the truth surrounding an affair his mother had with a young Polish prisoner of war, how the authorities came to discover this forbidden love, the subsequent arrest of the lovers, and the aftermath that followed.
As the man's son captures moments with his Polaroid camera, the father retraces the steps of his childhood and engages in conversations with those who should hold memories of those tumultuous times. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks, focusing on the passionate love story between Paulina and Stanislaus, the schemes of a jealous and manipulative neighbor, and the motivations of Mayer, the local SS commander, as he grapples with the impending consequences of his actions.
