Lilli Marlene, a French woman working as a barmaid in her uncle's café in Benghazi, Libya, is revealed as the inspiration for the popular German wartime song "Lili Marleen" written before the war. Both the British and the Germans seek to exploit her for propaganda purposes, especially as her singing talent becomes known. When the Germans abduct her in Cairo and she starts featuring in radio broadcasts from Berlin, her British soldier friends mistakenly believe she has joined the enemy. However, they are gravely mistaken. After the war, it is revealed that her radio broadcasts contained secret messages to London from British agents in Berlin.
