Up from the Beach (1965)

In 1944, during D-Day plus two, American sergeant Edward Baxter and his platoon land in Normandy. They liberate a French village from German forces, but confusion arises about evacuating civilians to the beach due to an expected German bombardment. After back-and-forth orders, the civilians and a captured German Major return to their village. When shelling begins, they seek shelter in a church basement, but not everyone survives.
