The initial Japanese assaults on Australia were executed by a quartet of submarines from the Sixth Submarine Squadron within the Imperial Japanese Navy. These submarines, crewed by 80 individuals each, undertook the deployment of mines before strategically positioning themselves in readiness to launch torpedoes at identified targets. The events of 20 January 1942, however, marked a tragic turning point. The submarine I-124, along with its entire crew, met its demise, and to this day, its sunken remains lie off the coast of Darwin. This somber testament not only commemorates acts of courage but also serves as a reminder of the consequences of misjudgment.
