The Curtiss H-87, developed from the Allison V-1710 engine, emerged in 1941 as the P-40D, featuring a redesigned fuselage with a snub-nosed appearance. Despite efforts to improve performance over the next few years, later versions like the P-40N only marginally surpassed the initial models in speed. The P-40s' strengths lay in maneuverability, durability, and availability, making them suitable for fighter-bomber missions. They saw action in diverse theaters, from the Aleutian Islands to North Africa, contributing to the war effort. Production ceased in 1944 after Curtiss manufactured around 14,000 P-40s.
