A book about wartime in the village of Garrelsweer and the development of the resistance work of Tjaako Zijlema.

The book describes how the residents experienced the war years in the quiet village of Garrelsweer, located along the Damsterdiep between Groningen and Delfzijl. Many people in hiding, including Jewish children, found a safe refuge there during that time.

From 1943 onward, a resistance group began to form in Garrelsweer under the leadership of Tjaako Zijlema.

The book consists of three parts. The first part describes the course of the wartime period. The second part details the development of Tjaako Zijlema’s resistance efforts, and the third part provides background information and appendices, including a comprehensive register of names.

The author, Ineke Kerssies, spent years researching the resistance work of her grandfather, Tjaako Zijlema, of which only a few people in the village were aware. As a result, there was little recognition in the years after the war for this crucial and life-saving resistance work during the occupation.
