The monument in Bourtange, serves as a tribute to Ella and Mozes Braaf, a Jewish couple who resided in a cottage on the outskirts of Bourtange Fortress from 1932 to 1967.
During World War II, the couple was forced into hiding due to the persecution of Jews. In 1945, Ella and Mozes were eventually betrayed and transported to the Westerbork transit camp. Fortunately, liberation occurred shortly after, and no more trains were dispatched to the extermination camps. As a result, the couple returned to their home in Bourtange, where they lived until Mozes Braaf's passing in 1967. Ella Braaf followed him in death three years later.
Several years before the monument's unveiling, the municipality acquired and demolished Ella and Mozes Braaf's house to make room for developments within the Bourtange Fortress. The monument now stands on the very spot where their home once stood.
The monument is located at the corner of Bisschopsweg and Nieuwerkerksweg in Bourtange.
