In 1920s Germany, the lives of two 6-year-old twin sisters take a heartbreaking turn when, shortly after burying their remaining parent, they are forcibly separated. Lotte is sent to live with her upper-middle-class Dutch aunt in Holland, while Anna is sent to labor on her German uncle's farm.
The narrative follows the divergent paths of their lives as they strive to reconcile their differences against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of World War II. Decades later, in their old age, they have a chance to reunite, hoping that the disparities that marked their youth can finally find resolution and reconciliation.
