In a Jewish ghetto in Central Europe in 1944, Jakob Heym stumbles upon a piece of vital information purely by chance. He overhears a German radio broadcast revealing that the Soviet Army is steadily advancing towards Central Europe. To prevent his fellow sufferer, Mischa, from risking his life for a meager supply of potatoes, Jakob shares what he's heard and falsely claims to possess a radio—an act punishable by death in the ghetto.

Soon, the news of Jakob's secret spreads like wildfire, injecting newfound hope and purpose into the lives of those trapped in the ghetto. Now, Jakob must continually fabricate stories to maintain this newfound hope, putting him in the challenging position of having to conjure up more and more tales to sustain the fragile optimism of those around him.
