In 1931, a cartographer lands a plane in the Arctic to map uncharted regions. During this expedition, he rescues an Eskimo boy afflicted with tuberculosis and brings him back to civilization where he receives treatment and is placed in a Catholic foster home. In this new environment, the Eskimo boy befriends a "half-breed" girl, who has a French father and an Indian mother. Their friendship blossoms into love, but they are forcibly separated.
Years pass, and the Eskimo returns to the Arctic. However, fate reunites him with the cartographer, who helps convey a message to his lost love through their correspondence. Driven by a desire to contribute to the fight against Hitler, the Eskimo joins the air force, where he crosses paths with the girl once more. Yet, numerous obstacles threaten their friendships and relationships as they navigate their complicated lives.
