Since 2012, the Memorial 40-45 Kapelle commemorative museum has been telling the remarkable and educational story of the French armed forces who fought against German troops in the Netherlands — and especially in Zeeland — during World War II. The museum also highlights the history and development of the French military cemetery in Kapelle, where fallen French soldiers are buried and remembered. In addition, it tells the story of the local population of Kapelle and what life was like during the occupation. We do all this from our home-based museum on Goessestraatweg.
A significant portion of the collection was amassed by Mr. Minus Goud from Krabbendijke over several years, encompassing uniforms, helmets, weaponry, and medals. Following his passing, Andries Looijen assumed responsibility for the collection and continued to augment it with valuable items. In 2011, when Andries took ownership of the collection, he envisioned utilizing the old barn connected to his residence as an exhibition space for the extensive array of military artifacts. Subsequently, the barn underwent renovations, and in February 2020, the museum was relocated to a temporary location.
The collection prominently features numerous French artifacts, shedding light on a relatively lesser-known French battle that unfolded in May 1940 in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Visitors to the museum can explore French uniforms (224RI & 271RI) worn by those who fought in Zeeland, along with weaponry, medals, historical documents, and even a Red Cross uniform worn by a nurse who tended to wounded French soldiers at St. Joanna Hospital in Goes. Additionally, various other objects used by French soldiers during their wartime presence in the Netherlands are on display.
The museum takes visitors on a chronological journey through the war years, providing an impactful experience for individuals of all ages. Furthermore, the museum frequently organizes Battlefield Tours, visits to the official French cemetery, and narrates compelling stories within its historical exhibits.
