Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

After being torn apart from their mother in the strategic bombing of Kobe during World War II, Seita, a fourteen-year-old, and his four-year-old sister, Setsuko, are left to wander through the ruins of their devastated city. With their father in service within the Japanese Imperial Navy and their distant aunt preoccupied with her own family's survival, the siblings must navigate a desolate and scarred landscape. In a war-torn country where necessities like shelter and resources are in short supply, Seita and Setsuko are forced to scavenge for food. Amid the harsh reality, life must carry on. Yet, in the midst of their struggles, they ponder a profound question: Why are fireflies destined to perish so prematurely?
