“H.W.R. was hier” is the story of a Canadian soldier, written by Ernst Arbouw.
In a patch of forest in Eelde, just outside the city of Groningen, Arbouw discovers a tree with the initials of a Canadian soldier carved into it: H.W.R. TORONTO. CANADA. Arbouw becomes fascinated—obsessed, even. Who was H.W.R.?
With nothing more than those three letters, he begins his search and eventually finds a name in an Allied archive: Harold Wilbert Roszell, 21 years old, killed during the liberation of Groningen on April 16, 1945.
In H.W.R. was hier, the reader joins a breathtaking journey that begins on a quiet street with the author and ends at a doorstep in Toronto. Along the way, Arbouw tells the story of ordinary Canadian soldiers and their role in the liberation of the Netherlands. Why did they enlist? How did they see Europe and the Dutch people?
In this beautifully written and fateful history, the war comes almost tangibly close.
